Working with Difference - Course Overview

This CSCT short course comprises a five-hour workshop on Working with Difference. It is aimed at counsellors, health, social care and education professionals.
Participants who attend the workshop will be given a CSCT Certificate of Attendance.

Entry Requirements

Training and experience in counselling and/or interpersonal skills, with experience in client work either one to one or group work. Trainees at advanced diploma level or above, who have some supervised client work experience in a professional setting are also invited to attend.


This one-day course aims to:

  • Identify how our ethnic and cultural backgrounds shape and influence who we are today
  • Identify, distinguish and actively seek to understand alternative perspectives
  • Consider the elements of prejudice and discrimination
  • Explore and challenge own issues, fears and prejudices
  • Consider clients' issues of difference and diversity

  • The universal nature of Difference
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Anti-discriminatory Practice

Workshop Activities

A blend of information, group discussion, and role-play will be provided. The emphasis will be on active learning related to participants' work based experience. The main forms of learning involve:

  • Trainer and group led discussion
  • Practical exercises in pairs and small groups
  • Personal reflection

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop participants should be able to:

  • Identify the elements of prejudice and discrimination in a professional context
  • Evaluate the impact of own cultural perspectives on professional practice
  • Challenge own issues and prejudices
  • Identify the importance of anti-discriminatory practice
  • Develop anti-discriminatory practice
