CSCT Introduction to Counselling Skills for 16-19 year old trainees

Course Overview

This new CSCT 30-hour Introduction to Counselling Skills is designed for trainees who are 16-19 years old. The course is designed to meet the qualification requirements for CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Counselling Skills (ICSK-L2) and may be delivered in schools, colleges or youth centres. Interested training providers need to contact CPCAB for centre and qualification requirements at www.cpcab.co.uk

Entry requirements

Trainees need to be between 16-19 year olds. There are no formal entry requirements.

Aims of this course

This course aims to address how to:

  • Establish helping interactions with children and young people
  • Use introductory counselling skills safely
  • Focus on another person's issues
  • Communicate understanding of another's concerns
  • Develop self-awareness
  • Use study skills within the learning process

Course content

  • Helping interactions with children and young people
  • Understanding children and young people's concerns
  • Safety, boundaries and working within limits
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Introductory counselling skills
  • The importance of self awareness
  • Study skills


Course activities will include:

  • Trainer and group led discussion
  • Role-play and experiential exercises
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Personal reflection

Learning outcomes of this course

At the end of this workshop trainees will be able to:

  • Establish helping interactions and use counselling skills safely
  • Communicate the limits of this level of helping
  • Enable another to focus on and explore their issues
  • Demonstrate empathic understanding of another person's concerns
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and apply to helping interactions
  • Use study skills to reflect on and develop own learning
